So, first of all, we are Black (you know, African American…). And if you know anything about Black Folk, we love fried fish on Fridays. Well, since we were trying out this gluten-free thing, we could not venture off to our local fish spot, so we decided to make a gluten-free batter and fry fish at home!
A bag of perch, 3 large potatoes, a head of cabbage, Gluten-Free Cider, and a couple of miscellaneous things came to about $27. I would say that’s close enough to our budget. Granted, we had tons of ingredients already on hand… including the king-size bottle of hot sauce (remember, we talking about black folk).
This was a fun date because we cooked together… and by “together” I mean I cooked and he was the DJ and Hard Cider bottle opener. He did wash a few dishes to keep things moving along.
I would say this meal was on par with the fried fish spot that we usually go to (minus the hush puppies). Homemade cole slaw, homemade fries (from real potatoes), homemade tartar sauce. I would go so far as to call this the healthiest fried fish meal in African-American History!
#win-win
We ate it outside on the side porch. It definitely felt like we were at a cafe. The hard cider was cool and refreshing but did not take the place of a real beer. We ended up drinking a bottle of wine afterward.
A lovely night was had by all!
